Q: Expert insights is so happy to have Viktoria Novak for today’s interview! Can you tell us who is behind the stunning creations at Viktoria Novak?
A: My company, “Viktoria Novak”, was established and named after myself in September 2006. Each crown, bridal and race wear headpiece is personally hand created by me “Viktoria” at my design house in Sydney, Australia.
Q: Did you study Millinery? And how did you the become so interested in head wear?
A: To be honest, I fell into Millinery by accident. I had no intention in making Millinery my full-time job. My working career began as a visual merchandiser for a shoe company dressing display windows, before studying Interior Design. Although I enjoyed Interior Design, I wanted to dress people, not rooms. I quit my full-time job to study Fashion Design; and throughout my studies I had set my sights on becoming a costume designer. It wasn’t until my final year where I was required to select an elective subject that I fell into a Millinery class by pure accident. After experimenting with materials, I started creating headwear for brides, racing, and special events/occasions. Over 10 years later, I can’t imagine myself doing anything else other than creating headwear. It’s my passion and love, it’s not work for me – I’m just in my own bubble doing what I love most.
Q: What are your favorite materials to work with?
A: At the moment, I’m really enjoying working with brass components and leather. I’ll always love and enjoy working with traditional materials such as crystals and laces, but both brass and leather allow me to experiment further as I enjoy breaking rules and stepping over boundaries. My design motto is if I’ve seen it before, I’ll stay away from it… My designs are new and always a little different, but at the same time, they must remain classic, elegant and timeless.
Q: You have some gorgeous pieces in stock, do you also create custom-made headwear for brides?
A: Thank you! Every design is exclusively handmade by me from start to finish, so essentially every design is custom made to order with the exception of my bridal ready to wear range. Each year, I release a couture custom made to order bridal collection, which allows brides/clients to order from either our Sydney, Australia boutique or online boutique store. There is a lead time for the couture designs, and they do vary depending on my production design time and of course the complexity of the design. Some pieces can take up to 60 hours of work from start to finish.
Q: Where can brides find your work outside of Sydney?
A: I currently have a number of stockists across Australia, which includes selected Myer Department Stores and boutiques in various States and Territories across Australia. Viktoria Novak is also now available in Kuwait.
Q: You’ve been seen in all the top magazines like Vogue, Harpers Bazar, Elle and Cosmopolitan Bride. Acclaimed internationally, are you ready to take over the world?
A: To be honest, I’ve never really looked at in that way – I have so much going on day-to-day that I never really have the time to sit back and reflect on achievements. I know it is something that I should do a little more often. I have always had the dream to expand Viktoria Novak internationally, and being the first Australian Milliner to showcase a solo runway show at New York Fashion Week last September was definitely a proud moment in my 10 year Millinery career. I am ready for any challenge, I embrace and look forward to new projects and challenges, and when the right opportunity presents itself, I will always grab it with both hands, so if the world wants more Viktoria Novak – I would love to share more of my work with the world.
-La Bride would also love to see that. Thank you, Viktoria Novak!
