When life closes a door, somewhere it opens a window for you and perhaps guide you onto an even better path. For this photographer, it lead him to win 121 international awards within two years of taking part in photography competitions at an international stage. It’s hard even for us to believe that a few years ago, he has never even held a camera.
Today La Bride is proud to introduce to you Johnson Wee, a Malaysia-based photographer and the subject of this inspirational story. Johnson never fared well in college, nor does he admit to having any artistic talents growing up, yet by a chance given to him, he made something wonderful out of his life and became a creator of many award winning images. Sometimes the cards given to you in life aren’t always the best, but you can always make the best out of it.
Q: Hi Johnson, we’d like our audience to get to know more about you. Would you mind introducing yourself? Why did you choose to become a photographer?
A： I am a wedding photographer who specialises in pre-wedding/engagements and destination weddings. I started this profession by accident, after doing not so well in college ( being forced to take up this job by my mum whom I have to thank ) as a photographer assistant, and although my uncle and granduncle are photographers and owns photo lab, I did not receive any training as such when I was little, neither have I been artistic when I was young, nor have I had artsy hobbies like drawing or music. My hobbies are pretty much the same as any young guy, cars, computers and movies ( I love some pretty weird and hard to understand movies – Birdman, Shutter Island, Hugo, The Grand Budapest Hotel ).
Q: Having been through destination weddings, what’s your favourite city/ country? Why?
A： Well. I have been to more than 35 cities and 4 continents in the past 5 years, Japan is my favourite amongst them all. The reason is because of their unique culture, you cannot find it anywhere else in the world, another thing is their heavenly food and delicacies.
Q: Are there any unique weddings / preweddings you can share with us?
A： Well, I have done one with an elephant, another with a parrot, an oriental nyonya style, a shoot done at an old french castle, and one concept with the ancient thai costumes which I think is pretty cool.
Q: Can you talk a bit about your workshop? i.e. Any plans for the workshop in the near future? Any words to the people who are interested in becoming a photographer?
A： I started doing this workshop since end of last year, after getting more and more enquiries and messages from photographers around the world. So far, I have completed workshops and seminars in United Kingdom, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and will be heading to Hong Kong, Turkey, Cambodia, Thailand this year. For those of you who want to jumpstart your career in this industry, passion and practise are the 2 most important things you must have, because you have to like what you are doing. Also, always be inspired by everything around you, like movies, music, fashion, these little things are always inspiring in many different ways.
