Q: How did your career begin in the world of beauty?
A: Always love ART & Craft since young age.
Won the first prize award in Art study when I was in Yr 12.
But, worry I become Van Gogh…..When I died that’s when I make money.
So I decided to do marketing as my degree.
I am still very grateful to have the marketing and business background knowledge as there is a big area of business when you are an artist.
After I got tried of working my 9 to 5 business job. I decided to learn makeup as my sister in law was hair dresser. So I did 3 makeup certificate and starting working on small wedding jobs.
Within 1 year of starting my business. I entered the Art of Makeup Award Bridal Competition in the International beauty expo and WON the first prize.
(So looks like I got a bit of talent in this. ha ha)
Then, for the pass 8 years. I have been honored to be top 10 finalist of NSW for Hair & Makeup services awarded by Australian Bridal Industry Award (ABIA).
For the pass 2 years, I have been awarded as the Top 15 Finalist in the Art of Dream Nataional award by ABIA. It is really cool to be the TOP 15 Hair & Makeup Artist in Australia.
Q: What fascinates you about this line of work?
A: Is a new challenge everyday! You meet different people, face different situation.
Learn new things, new way on every job you attend, by meeting everyone you meet.
My job has taken me to amazing location such as, Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, as well as Internationally such as Japan, France, Paris, London, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea etc….
All amazing experiences with lots of happy hard work to fulfill my life.
Q: What are the biggest challenge makeup artists have to face?
A: Communication…As we often worry if we do a good job or not.
Did we understand the bridal language that each bride’s give out?
As everyone is different, as an artist, we want to cater for everyone’s needs and wants
with our professional skill set.
Being able to gain good communication with our client. Expressing our professional feedback.
Work out the best solution for both of us. is the biggest challenge as a professional artist.
Q: Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
A: Instagram Makeup…..
Everyone has different facial feature, what looks good on a BEAUTIFUL youthful blogger with the prefect face shape under a BRIGHT light and other perfect lighting.
Is not reality. As we are all different.
Q: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you do?
A: Mmmm…. I honestly will still stay in the wedding industry or be teaching Makeup or hairstyling.
I just LOVE my job so much. I cannot think of doing anything else.
I truly love Weddings. Even it is crazy sometimes, but it is still FUN and Loving!
What more job satisfaction can a job get you then LOVE?
Q: What advice can you give for young makeup artists who are just starting out and want to be where you are, at the top of the industry?
Know what you want?
A: Focus on what industry you want to go into, Fashion, TV, Film or Bridal.
As each industry has different unwritten rules and things you need to train yourself on.
Once you found out what you want, then FOCUS on it.
I am not saying not to try some fun jobs in other areas, but you need to know WHAT you really want at the end of the day. To make sure you focus on the dream you want at the end.
Learning different things is good, but if you keep doing everything without a SINGLE thing you are really good at, then it is not going to get you anything where.
We all have our strength in one area, then make that area SHINE like a diamond. As that is what going to give you a name.
My name in the industry is call “Queen of Speed” I am fast and still do Beautiful job.
That is my specialty that got me a good name.
Don’t give us and give in easy. Knowing what you want to project yourself into is super important.
The wedding industry has its perks and challenges. However, Martha, being Martha knows for sure that this is the thing she’s passionate about. Planning to continue delivering the best in this industry, Martha makes sure that no brides need to ever get up at 3 am in the morning for a good hair job and makeup for her big day.
