All brides need a makeup artist to perfect their day. With great skill, they add natural enhancements to the bride’s existing features and inner beauty, letting the bride shine their best on their big day. Luckily for us, we have Jennifer Kochenour from JKo Beauty to tell us more about her career and how her work is for today.
Q: How did you start your career as a makeup artist?
A: I always knew I wanted to be in the beauty industry. So right after high school in 1996, I began working in the cosmetics department of a large department store. I loved it! At the same time, I was attending cosmetology school to become licensed to do everything…hair, makeup, nails, esthetics. It was then that I also began working with a production company doing both hair and makeup for catalogs. In 2002 I attended the prestigious Westmore Academy of the Cosmetic Arts in Los Angeles, California. In addition to continuing my education, I also regularly seek new experiences. This has lead to so many really amazing opportunities and great relationships over the years. I have done it all…commercial, print, pageants, lessons, salon & day spa, New York Fashion Week, bridal beauty and so much more. My specialty is in Bridal Beauty and I believe my other experience has only made me more prepared and efficient.
Q: What fascinates you about this line of work?
A: What fascinates me about working with brides is how much love and excitement I feel every time. I never lose interest or tire of my work. I am so honored to be chosen every single time.
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge a makeup artist like you face these days?
A: I feel as though the biggest challenge a makeup artist such as myself faces these days is the lack of respect and commitment to the industry. Being a makeup artist has become something of a trend. There are not enough regulations and guidelines to being a makeup artist. So unfortunately, there are a large number of individuals marketing themselves as professionals. This leads to distrust and confusion with clients. True professionals will always have a place but the negative impact to clients is an absolute shame.
Q: If there’s one product you can’t work without, what would it be and why?
A: To say that there is one product I can’t work without is hard! There are so many products that make a huge difference to the overall look and wear. So I’ll say my credit card, because I will not do without any of those key products. Can I choose that?!
Q: How would you describe your signature look?
A: I would describe my signature look as naturally pretty yet glamorous. I would say it is classy and timeless yet has a subtle sexiness and modern touch. I believe all women should feel beautiful as they are, for who they are and their makeup should only enhance their individual beauty.
Q: What’s the one thing a bride should do to look extra flawless prior to the big day?
A: The one thing a bride should do to look extra flawless for her big day is to take care of herself. Enjoy all the special moments, drink and eat healthy as much as possible, regularly workout, be diligent with skin care, keep up on hair treatments. These are things you can not fake on the big day.
