The tale of a young cowherd mortal, Niulang and a weaver Zhinü rings a similar tone. The story goes that the two fell in love and got married, but their bond was met with a disapproval by Zhinü’s Mother, the Queen of Heaven. With a swift move of her hairpin, they were separated by a river in the sky, known today as the Milky Way. After seeing Niulang’s desperate attempts to get back to Zhinü failure after failure, her heart was softened and she gave them one night per year to spend time with each other. On this night, magpies bridge the celestial gap between this two lovers, bringing them together. This story was passed down for generations and is now known by the Chinese as Seventh Day, or Qixi Festival.
