It seems to be getting fairly trendy these days to try new things at a wedding reception. Couples enjoy setting up fun little details and activities as a means of making their celebrations unique. If this appeals to you as you think about planning your own wedding though, be sure to think outside the box somewhat. That is to say, don’t just introduce yet another wacky photo booth and have that be it; if you really want to spice up the reception, so to speak, opt for something a bit less common.
That could be just about anything and depends largely on personal preferences. Here are some ideas to get you started though.
1.) Have A Flower Station
Having a flower station set up at your wedding reception actually isn’t unheard of. It’s recommended as a way to turn flowers into favors, such that guests can take their own arrangements home. But the idea can also be fun during the actual reception, particularly if you go a little overboard with it. Basically, think about using as much of your flower budget as you can to set up a DIY arrangement station with as much variety as possible. With this, each guest could arrange his or her own little vase, or each table could make its own centerpiece. It’s not the sort of thing that will totally alter the party, but it’s a nice fun touch, not every wedding has.
2.) Put Taps On Tables
As you may or may not have noticed, there’s a little bit of a trend developing in bars and restaurants toward giving customers access to their own beer and wine taps. This is something you can replicate at a wedding reception, though it may cost you a little bit in terms of money and organization. Still, having a few wine taps and perhaps a miniature beer keg for each table can be a wonderful touch. It allows guests to spend more time talking and enjoying themselves and less waiting in line at bar counters, not to mention people will simply think it’s cool!
3.) Start Up A Betting Market
This is something most people are either intimately or not at all familiar with. But even if you’re new to the idea of betting, it’s easy enough to get the picture. The betting markets in Australia and the UK are available the whole world over, and though their specific listings won’t be relevant to you, they can essentially give you a snapshot of how this works. You’ll learn how odds can be assigned to different outcomes, and what it all looks like. Then you just have to apply it all to a wedding reception and invite guests to bet on whatever might happen. You can assign odds to different songs for the first dance, let people bet on who might cry during a speech, etc. It may sound somewhat random, but just imagine the fun buzz in the room as people watch to see if their bets pay off.
4.) Let Tables Compete In Trivia
Letting different tables compete in a wedding-wide trivia contest is another way to create a palpable buzz in the room, and get everyone to have fun together. If you want to keep things personal, you can design a sort of trivia contest based on yourself, as the bride or groom, and the prominent people involved in the wedding. However, you can also find great bar trivia questions online or look to any number of different trivia apps to get ideas for more generic competition. Whatever you decide to do specifically, it’s a fun, unexpected way to make sure everyone has a great time during dinner and throughout the reception. You may even spark a few friendships between people who otherwise would only have exchanged greetings!
5.) Wrap Up With A Surprise Party
It’s a more elaborate idea, but you can really surprise your guests by announcing a brief surprise party just as things seem to be wrapping up. This can mean any number of things. For some, rolling out a karaoke machine might be the perfect way to go. For others, distributing cheap headphones for a silent headphone party might be a fun idea. You could even consider bringing out a live band after a DJ has had the stage for most of the night! The key here is surprising, and if you do it right you can extend the reception in a way everyone will be thrilled by.
