Whether your wedding is an intimate ceremony with just two people who love each other or a fantastic event where everyone you’ve ever loved has joined you on your special day, you’ll never forget the moment you say “I do”. Today we have the opportunity to hear from marriage celebrant Joshua Withers from Queensland, Australia. He shares some valuable insight on Australia weddings and how to find the celebrant who will make your ceremony magical.
Q1: What’s the most memorable wedding in your career? Where was it be held?
The most memorable wedding in my career was only a few weeks ago on Roys Peak overlooking Lake Wanaka. Ana and Lauren travelled to New Zealand from Washington DC and invited me to be their celebrant, Britt from The Elopement Collective to plan their elopement and Lauren Campbell to photograph their ceremony. There we are, 4000 feet above the earth, just us and two kids in love. Pretty amazing!
Q2: How to get married in Australia? What should I know?
Australia has some of the most liberal, progressive, and accepting marriage laws in the world, unless you are hoping to marry someone of the same gender as you (that’s the case at time of writing).
To get married in Australia you need to be eighteen or older, not already married, not related, give more than one month’s notice to your celebrant and be willing and consenting to entering into this marriage with this other person for the rest of your life. Your civil celebrant looks after the rest!
Q3: How long will it take to prepare a wedding in Australia? What should I consider?
The minimum amount of planning time in Australia is one month, but if you’re hoping to get married on a Saturday with the best vendors, start planning more than eighteen months out.
Q4: How much is the average cost to hire a marriage celebrant in Australia?
The average cost of a full-time professional marriage celebrant in Australia is $1200 including tax.
Q5: What should we prepare if we want to have a civil ceremony?
You should be prepared to have a fun and meaningful marriage ceremony, one that celebrates the marriage beginning, not so much the wedding taking place.
