Yumi Katsura started her career in 1964 as Japan’s first bridal fashion designer. In the following year she held the very first bridal fashion show ever held in Japan. After that she has continued to hold a fashion show every year and is a driving force and leader of the bridal fashion industry in Japan. Just look at these gowns, positively stunning.
Yumi tells us a little more about her career and what drives her to create new and exclusive works each year.
Q: Welcome Yumi ! Can you tell us a little about your background and history?
A: I was born in Tokyo, Japan. I graduated from the university, and moved to Paris to study the technique of haute couture at Les Ecoles de la Chambre Syndicate de la Couture Parisienne.
I have produced many fashion shows in more than 30 countries around the world. I was honored with the Japanese foreign minister award in 1993, and the new bridal fashion culture award by the Chinese authorities in 1996. I was designated an Honorary member of Association of All American Bridal Consultants which honored only 4 people in the world and I participated in establishing Asian Couture Federation as one of the founders.
Q: Would you like to introduce us to some of your more popular Bridal gowns?
A: This dress is made of pure gold and it has a price tag of approx. USD 450,000 and was shown in 2016 Yumi Katsura Grand Collection in Tokyo for the first time
Q: What’s your designing trend for 2016?
A: “Golden Rose Legend”
We are going to open a new bridal salon in Suzhou in China this year. The first floor of the salon will be made of “gold”, which must be so rare.
Q: After admiring all your gowns I think the next question all our brides to be would like to know is, how long would it take for a customised gown?
A: 3- 6 months which depends on design and/or materials
Q: Can you give your price range for our readers’ reference?
A: JPY 1.5 million to 3 million for haute couture (from $18,700 – $37,400 AUD)
JPY 300,000 to 500,000 for pret-a-porte -Ready to wear (that’s between $3,750 – $6,250 AUD)
Q: Yumi Katsura has been established for 50 years and gained huge success in Japan and around the world, what’s brand plan for the next 50 years?
A: I have established my business in Japan, US, Canada, China, France and Myanmar (a new salon in 2016 August) so far. But I would like to expand more to Russia, Germany, Thailand, Indonesia and so on as the top brand in the bridal fashion industry.
