Here at La Bride, we absolutely adore hand crafted wedding dresses that will make any bride swoon. Anna Schimmel is an award winning New Zealand based wedding designer dressmaker and creates those particular gowns you dream of wearing.
A great quality of Anna’s is that she loves working with brides and genuinely enjoys helping women find the perfect wedding dress. She tells us why and shows off some of her stunning creations.
Q: Today’s feature is dream wedding dress designer Anna Schimmel. Welcome to La Bride! Can you tell our readers a bit more about an Anna Schimmel creation?
A: Anna Schimmel wedding dresses are designed and developed with great care. We have a reputation for excellent cut and timeless design. Brides love our gowns and emphasize how feminine and flattered they feel wearing the beautiful fabrics and fine tuned cuts.
Q: Was bridal design your first passion in the fashion industry?
A: I have been in the fashion industry for over 30 years and have much experience under my belt. During those years I have worked intensely in Haute Couture, did quite a bit of high fashion and ran a Theater workshop. For me it has been a natural progression to move into bridal. Here my wide ranging skills can be applied and I won’t run out of challenges.
I believe my in-depth background in the fashion industry keeps my designs fresh and unexpected without compromising quality.
Q: What can a bride expect when she walks into an appointment with you?
A: To try on beautiful wedding dresses, have an expert (me!) listen in-depth to her story and ideas, and get sincere and caring assistance on her journey to the perfect wedding dress.
Q: How long does it take for a gown to be created?
A: For me to create the initial design ( I still create it myself – and usually change it heaps until it’s just so;) takes a few weeks from idea to sample. I now outsource production after my initial sample, amongst other manufacturers we are just trialing a Fair trade workshop. Six months from order is a good timeline.
Q: How important is it to tailor a gown to a bride, both in design and fittings?
A: I have custom designed wedding dresses for brides for many years now, but have found with the emergence of Pinterest that more and more local designers are used only to copy designs from the internet. This is one reason why I have withdrawn from custom design.
We now offer a stunning new ready-to-wear collection, which is being extremely well received.
Q: You have been featured all over the world. What is next for Anna Schimmel bridal wear?
A: We now have our first Australian Stockists without really trying, and I will be showcasing my collection at the New York Bridal Week in October. Here bridal retailers look for designers to stock, so it will be interesting what happens. I develop the collection myself and keep the business quite small scale. This enables us to offer high quality wedding gowns at a very competitive price. I believe the gowns will pretty much sell themselves.
Thank you so much Anna. Looking forward to seeing your creations all over Australia and the world!
