They say where you start from says a lot about where you’ll end up! But when it comes to planning a wedding, the most pressing question a couple faces is where to start from. Guest list? Venue? Decor? Budget? There is an endless list of questions that need answers. Undoubtedly, the wedding planning process can be really overwhelming. Thankfully, we have professional wedding planners like Jenny Chang from Rock N’ Events who can make wedding planning a breeze. La Bride recently got an opportunity to speak with Los Angeles wedding planner Jenny Chang and know about her planning style. Read on to know more.
Q: Hi Jenny, Will you tell us about how you got your start as a wedding planner? What made you so passionate about what you do?
A: Firstly, thank you for the opportunity to speak to you all. What an honor! I started my career in wedding coordination when I was studying at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). Majored in Visual Communication and specialized my education around Event Design & Planning. I’d say my passion for the career was born from a very strong desire to party, to be surrounded by love, and to become an event producer. The funniest thing is, I never actually went to a wedding before starting Rock N’ Events. Not even as a guest! I genuinely desired this vision I had in designing and producing celebrations. I knew I wanted a career that would allow me to express my creativity and create moments. I get to meet couples at the happiest times in their lives, and guide them into a journey that they can only experience, once. How incredible is that? I’m responsible for every feeling and decision my couples make during the process, and how those feelings and memories will be treasured for the rest of their lives. That’s what makes me passionate about what I do. This is the reason I do, what I do, best.
Q: What sort of services do you offer? What should a couple expect when they hire you as their wedding planner?
A: From a Full Planning journey all the way to a Month-of Production experience – and anything and everything in between, we do it all at Rock N’ Events. I think the best service my associates and I can offer is a genuine friendship with our brides and grooms. You don’t work with a typical “wedding planner” at Rock N’ Events. You work with a super professional best friend. Friendship is the key to guiding our members into the best and most fun wedding journey. What should a couple expect when they hire a wedding planner, or when they hire Rock N’ Events? Haha, because believe me guys, there’s a big difference! A wedding planner plans, but an event manager at Rock N’ Events produces. What every couple can experience when working with a producer at Rock N’ Events is to journey on a once-in-a-lifetime experience in planning their wedding months and day with a best friend, and to feel like a star every day during the tour. The trust and friendship that is built between our members and coordinators is everything to me. I believe every couple should enjoy every moment in their wedding journey, in order to create the best day of their lives. The journey and the special day has to be ‘one.’
Q: Many people have heard of “bridezillas.” How do you handle a bride who is overly demanding? And how do you draw the line of what you will do or won’t do as a wedding planner?
A: Oh, yes! I have heard of them, do they still exist!? Luckily, we don’t attract too many of them! I believe there are skills you must acquire as a professional planner to deal with “bridezillas.” When I encounter a bride that is overly demanding, first, I’ll stop to put myself in her shoes and see things in her perspective. I ask myself, why she feeling this way? Is the challenge something I can control or is this something only she can help herself with? Once I figure out why the bride is overly demanding, I will find a solution and do all that is in my control to solve the problem. Depending on the extent of the situation and the bride, I will always, first, try and find a solution. If after everything I can do doesn’t seem to work, I will graciously withdraw from the contract, and refer her to someone that can make her happy. It may even be, herself. Every bride should experience greatness in the planning journey. If she finds herself wanting to control everything, she may just realize that she needs to do this on her own, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I understand a coordinator is not for everyone, and that’s okay! As long as everyone in the picture is happy, that’s all that really matters. The only two things that will make me draw the line is first, how is the bride is affecting my team. If I find that the bride is a threat to my team, that would be the green light in letting her free. Secondly, if the bride does not see the value in what my team and I do as professionals. I produce weddings because of the value it brings in providing an unparalleled experience. I would hope any bride that hires a wedding coordination team would see the value in that.
Q: What is your creative process in planning a wedding? What do you do in order to keep track of all the little details?
A: Knowing who my couples are is the key to the creative process. I want to know their lifestyle. I want to know their home decor, personal style and the special elements that make them ‘one.’ Did the love of dogs bring them together? The passion for gaming, or exercise? Who are they as individuals, and who did they become while sharing their moments together? I need to learn everything about my couples in order to create an event that is designed specially for them. I want their fans to attend the couple’s wedding and say “That’s so John & Kate!” or “they would choose this style!”. Every couple’s wedding day should make their own stamp in this world – an experience to remember.
As for details and organization, aside from the help of savvy software and digital tools, I rely on my team, the producers of Rock N’ Events- the ones that make all of my career dreams come true. Producing a wedding requires a merging of the greatest minds. It’s my team, my associates; it’s Rock N’ Events that make every successful rock n’ event.
Q: You’ve had many achievements since you founded Rock N’ Events in 2013. What would you say is the key to your success and where do you see that success taking you in the future?
A: Thank you for noticing! The greatest achievement I’ve made throughout my career are my very prodigies. The richest thing I could have ever done is to build the team that I have today. Every coordinator, designer, representative, and intern of Rock N’ Events is the real antidote to my success. Without them, I don’t have the foundation I have today. In the near future, I envision my dream team and I producing every style wedding and special event in all corners of the world. I see us growing stronger and larger, and making a stamp in the world with our out-of-this-world events. Oh, and we’ll be planning our own festivals, soon! We’ll make sure to send an invitation when they go ‘live!’ Thank you again for the interview LA Bride. I am so grateful and beyond flattered by this incredible opportunity.
